Subject: Looking to make friends in East Kingdom (Texts: 1 )

Hello all! I just moved to the East Kingdom (Albany/Guilderland) from the Kingdom of Caid and have not met any SCAdians. I like mundanes but it gets lonely being around them day in and day out! I am an amateur fencer, so it would be great to make friends with the same interests. Feel free to say hi <img:stuff/happyswordsman.gif><img:stuff/joustmedieval.png>

Other location was just announced today: Russellville AR. Information on either area would be wonderful and greatly appreciated.

Subject: Art of War-An Tir's 4-Day Intensive Training Event (Texts: 2 )

Greetings from Sir Brand of Aquaterra, An Tir. Art of War is especially for Fighters (HardSuit, Armored Archer and Rapier) and Event Stewards. This is a unique event in An Tir's History and we hope that some of you can attend and bring back the teachings we are providing.

A Registration Deadline is fast approaching (Feb. 15).

We hope to have the SCA Approved on-line Credit Card system (ACCEPS) as a payment option as soon as possible. In case it happens in the next few days, here is the basic page:
http://acceps.ansteorra.org/regit/event_main.php

Until then we happily accept mailed-in registrations, or just an email to let us know to 'pencil in' someone until the paperwork can arrive.

This is an intensive 4-day event (Thursday - Sunday, April 10-13, 2008) where WE provide all your food and lodging. It is being held in Snohomish Washington (about an 1.5 hours north of Seattle). It's Website is www.sca-artofwar.org. I am the Event Steward: Sir Brand (alymere@gmail.com).
Check out the Website.
I would be happy to send the whole 'Press Release' to any who email me.

Thanks, Sir Brand, MPel.

Subject: Something I was thinking of.. (Texts: 2 )

Please forgive if I've posted erroneously, I'm quite new to the site and still fumbling my way around.

But one thing I've been thinking of the last few weeks, while working on my 'name''device' and our shire hosting our first event in 10 years or so (thinking a little less but who's counting?) , is the number of 'newbies' without meaning the term to be insulting, as I still consider myself one, who aren't familiar with all of the ins and outs, and quid pro quo's, policies/procedures, tricks of the trade, hard learned lessons, social faux pas and gafs, that really should be briefly described in a
"Newbies Guide to the SCA"

Nothing terribly in depth, but a brief description of "here's a good source to help you come up with a proper name "Lord Conan the Elf slayer", and "no you can't call yourself Sir Robyn without being awarded such"... Such as use of titles, generic court policies, ( addressing peers by Sir/Dame, AoA's by Lord/Lady, not wearing circlets, coronets, crowns and other devices) as well as what the various terms mean, Pelican, Laurel, AoA, etc.,

A friend of mine who has her AoA told me the story of her very first event, she wore a white belt unknowingly, referred to herself as Lady XXXXX, and had a circlet of pearls.. Someone who WAS of the peerage didn't recognize her, asked whom she was and where she was awarded, and instead of delving to find out "this is just a poor newb" decided to snub her. Thankfully her local Senechal spotted her and politely and quietly dragged her aside and helped explain things to her. Sometimes a ounce of prevention is better than a pound of good ol fashioned snobbery.

Anyhow, I was thinking, and rambling as its past midnight, that perhaps a thread, or topic, or even publication if we get enough help, on a "Newbies Guide to the SCA" or "How I survived my first event" could make our addiction more enjoyable to those ignorant of the way ( myself included)The Previous thread on Households already gave me much information, as I did not know how the households worked, could one be a member of many households, etc.,

Subject: Looking for Leather Boot Patterns (Texts: 3 )

I work in leather, and need some boot patterns to use for making some nice boots.. I don't care much for boot covers, but I will settle for those if nothing else.. I'm tired of my combat boots showing, as it is all I have other than flip flops to wear.. :(

I am reasonably able to work with leather, just don't have the base to start from..

Subject: Moving to Meridies (Texts: 5 )

I am moving to Meridies next month in the Lawrenceville Ga area. I wrote the Kingdom Senescal 2 months ago for which Shire/Barony has precedence over this area but have received no response.

Is there anyone out there that is a member of the list that knows this information?

Subject: Conventions (Texts: 7 )

On Elftown, we are gathering information about fantasy and sci-fi-related conventions:
http://elftown.lysator.liu.se/_conventions

Many of these are of course medieval related and might interest the Thunderers. Message me if you want to add some public events there! I'm still thinking about exactly what to include.

I guess Thunder's Keep should have a similar list for the SCA events we have in the Calendar. [Valgardr]? <img:stuff/sly.jpg>

Subject: House/Kingdom Traditions (Texts: 3 )

Just a question of curiosity (ok and a little research for new fun things to do). There are certain traditions that I think are SCA-wide, such as the Cloven Fruit game for meeting people. My household has it's own traditions, such as our Annual Ogre-Egg hunt (See Household Wiki for more info). What traditions, (or just simple games) either in your Household or all the way up to Kingdom level, does your group have?

Subject: SCA Housholds (Texts: 9 )

Alright, I've been considering starting my own house for a few years now. I'm not well known in the SCA, don't even have my AoA yet(no one notices the guy who helps clean up when he can, heaven forbid anyone not fighting and making things gets an AoA, lol)

But I'd still like to start a household, It would be small to start with, I can only think of one person other than me to bring into it, but I figure it would be a nice way to start gaining some more notability as well as some new friends (Small house parites for the win)

I was wondering if anyone out there would have suggestions, organizaitional wise, member gaining wise, etc for someone who is determined to have his own house? (I have this obsession with having a 'family')

Suggestions severly appreciated.

Subject: Google searches (Texts: 5 )

If you search on Google for "sca photos" or "sca pictures", SCA photos will appear on the first page. Very nice!

About a person a day finds Thunder's Keep and your photos that way.

In the end, I hope that Thunder's Keep will show up in most of SCA-related searches.
