Subject: Period Music

Ginevra... and all, greetings good gentyls, Doth Baron Wylfred of Morganvayle send to all his SCA cousins from all parts of the Knowne World.

Actual period music reproduction is not as "easy" as one might suspect... Much of the problem results from the evolution of the human ear (a far as nice sound goes) Modern players who try to take a few steps back in time, generally have a very difficult time getting into the mind set and the scale sensitivity and the "way" period music was once done... SCA came into being when a good old i. iv. V rock and roll progression in 4/4 time was the standard... and what ya grow up with is usually what you tune into... Now your hard core musician who is bent on rediscovering the true period music of any time frame will go to any lentgh to try to achieve said goal... but these people are few and far between... and the truer truth of the SCA is that for 40 years it has been a PARTY after hours... Irish Pub music and other bawdy tunes, suffice and pass for "period music" for the vast majority of SCA participants... when they are being drunk and disorderly (in a nice way of course)... kids will be kids... even grown up kids LOL!

I have done my share of "bardic participation" either as the entertainer or the entertained... If it sounds good... sing it, if it feels good, better yet!

I do not disagree in the least, that in an Art-Sci way... and for hard core competitions and exhibitions... some good solid period style reproduction would be an excellent ideal to pursue... But for the average lesser noble slob like me... Gimme the Party tunes any day (night) around a bonfire!

Wolgemut RAWKS!

Best regards to all,
Wylfred
